Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple

Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple

Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple, located next to Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine, used to be an ascetic practice center that became part of the shrine until the early Meiji period (1868-1912), when it was temporarily destroyed in the movement to abolish Buddhism. The temple has many spots from which visitors can view the Nachi WaterFall, and the three-story pagoda, which houses a statue of the thousand-armed Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) said to be the true identity of the waterfall, also offers a spectacular view. It is a famous temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism that is visited by many pilgrims as the first temple of the 33 sacred places of the Kannon Sacred Shrine in the western part of Japan.
