Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine

Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine

Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine is a Shinto shrine that originated from the primitive nature worship of Nachi Waterfall. Although the shrine was rebuilt in the late Edo period (1603-1867), it is the only one of the Kumano Sanzan shrines that still retains the medieval layout of the shrine pavilions, which are arranged so that visitors can view the Nachi WaterFall across the valley. The Hirou Shrine, a separate shrine within the grounds of the shrine, enshrines the Nachi Waterfall itself as it deity, and visitors can worship the waterfall up close on the "Otaki-Haijo-Butai" and drink water from the basin, which is said to be beneficial for prolonging one's life.
