Kumano Kodo, Daimonzaka Slope

Kumano Kodo, Daimonzaka Slope

Daimonzaka Slope, the old approach to Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine is a short and easy path to walk, but is also a great course for beginners who can fully appreciate the atmosphere of the time. The 1-kilometer-long path of gentle stone steps and cobblestone pavement is surrounded by a grove of beautiful cedar trees that are several hundred years old. There are also many interesting sights, such as the "Furigase Bridge," which serves as a boundary between the sanctuary and the secular world, and the 800-year-old "husband-and-wife cedar trees”. Here, visitors can experience the Heian period (about 1,000 years ago), when Kumano pilgrimages were popular, by dressing up in Heian-period costumes and paying homage. Wearing the graceful costume, you can travel back in time to 1,000 years ago.
