Yuasa Town

Yuasa Town

Yuasa Town has flourished in the brewing industry, facilitating the production of soy sauce and the Wakayama specialty "Kinzanji Miso". Around 700 years ago when miso was being produced here, the liquid that settled at the bottom of the barrels was found to be a seasoning, which was then adjusted to produce soy sauce, the main seasoning in Japan. Meaning it is now known as the birthplace of soy sauce. The townscape has been designated as an "Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings," and the machiya houses and storehouses from the olden days can still be seen here. The good old Japanese atmosphere can be felt here and there, with the "Okasho" rest area, which is a reused liquor store, and the "Jinburo" museum, which is a renovated bathhouse, being two examples that contribute to this.
