Oharai-machi Street

Oharai-machi Street

“Oharai-machi" is town all year round as a gate town that has flourished since the Edo period. Old wooden buildings typical to Ise line the beautiful stone pavement for about 800 meters from the Uji Bridge to the Sarutahiko Shrine. In the past, there used to be a row of houses of Shinto priests called "oshi" who entertained visitors from all over the country, and the town's name is said to derive from the name "oharai," which means "purification" in Japanese, referring to the talismans given by the priests to the visitors. The town is also known for its specialties such as "Ise Udon" and "Tekonezushi”.
