Myoe Shonin Nishi-Shirakami sites

This is the place where Myoe Shonin, a high priest of the Kamakura period (1185-1333) who rebuilt Kozanji Temple (Kyoto City) which is famous for "Birds and Animals Caricatures", established his first hermitage after returning to his hometown, Arita. The view of the sea of Yuasa from the summit of West Shirakami Mountain, which rises approximately 184 meters above sea level, is a clear one. It is said that after his death, his disciples erected a stupa in memory of his legacy. Although it is a gently sloping low mountain, the trail is not paved, so it is best to wear hiking clothes.
