It takes only an hour to get to Shin-Fuji station on Tokaido Shinkansen. Here you can take a bus to the west part of Mt. Fuji to visit Fujinomiya city and Shiraito Falls. If you get off at Mishima Station on Tokaido Shinkansen, you can try famous local food in Numazu city and take local trains to the east part of Mt. Fuji.

Tokaido Shinkansen

Tokaido Shinkansen was the first bullet train opened in the 1960s, connecting Tokyo and Osaka. Operated by JR Central, Tokaido Shinkansen offers you the fastest way through the Golden Route. Sitting in a comfortable chair with a great view and having a Bento (Japanese lunch box) became almost the main ritual on Japanese bullet trains. You can buy Bento at the station or get a snack and drink available on-board sales.

Mount Fuji is one of the few places in the world that, upon seeing it in person for the first time, actually lives up to the pictures. The beauty of the hallowed mountain is an exercise in contrasts. You will be overwhelmed at first by the lush greenery of the trail and, later, the size of the craggy rocks. The variety is quite something to see. And even if you don't make it to the top, the spectacular views from the spots along the way will leave you speechless. (Of course, you'll need to be lucky with the weather!)
You can even take a bus up to the 5th station, dramatically cutting down on hiking time. This gives you more options on how to best tackle this sacred mountain.

Kitaguchihongu Fuji Sengenjinja
Visiting a Shinto Shrine with ancient ties to Mount Fuji's misty past.

This shrine goes hand in hand with Mount Fuji, and is a definite recommendation. Head of the Asama shrine group, these nine shrines are all dedicated and centered on the worship of the mountain itself. With history of over 1000 years, this shrine has been synonymous with Mount Fuji in the eyes of the locals and has stood through wars, earthquakes, and societal upheaval.
The highlights of the Kitaguchihongu Fuji Sengenjinja are the giant cedar and cypress trees estimated to be over a millenium old and the large stones that are said to have been a training place for famous monks.
This shrine is definitely not one to be missed. Be sure to visit it during your journey up the mountain!
