Kyoto is a world renowned ancient city of Japan with a history dating back over 1,000 years.
Visitors can experience the traditions and aesthetics of Japan by exploring the various temples and shrines, including 17 World Heritage sites such as To-ji Temple and Ninnaji Temple.
Also awaiting you are nostalgic strolls through the streets of Gion and Arashiyama, and a trip to indulge your taste buds with traditional Kyoto cuisine.
Traveler's Choice
Kyoto is known for its refined cuisine. Kaiseki, a traditional multi-course meal, is a must-try, offering a beautifully presented array of seasonal dishes.
Some of the Must-do would be the Kiyomizudera Temple which is absolutely stunning, but also the Fushimi Inari which has a really mysterious feeling when climbing the Tori road. I recommend going there early for a better experience.
I traveled from Shinagawa to Kyoto on the Shinkansen. The green car was very comfortable and I arrived in a little more than two hours, and along the way I saw Mt. Fuji! It was a very memorable experience.
Matcha is definitely a must, because that is what Kyoto is famous for. Other unique dishes I liked were the Obanzai, Yodofu and Yuba.
Shinkansen travel was very easy and I loved that we could reserve our seats to sit beside each other. My husband and I played a little card game to pass the time and took breaks to look out on the countryside as we passed.
In Kyoto, participating in a tea ceremony is a quintessential experience that allows you to appreciate Japan’s tea culture in a tranquil setting. You can also rent a kimono and stroll around the city's historic districts like Gion or Higashiyama, feeling immersed in traditional Japanese culture.
