Adults and Children

Adults and children are classified as below.

ADULT 12 years old or older
(A 12-year-old child still in elementary school counts as "CHILD")(*)
CHILD 6 to 11 years old
(A 6-year-old child who has not entered elementary school counts as "INFANT")(*)
INFANT 1 to 5 years old
BABY Younger than 1 year old

(*) The exceptions above apply only when the “elementary school” is established under the Japanese law.

Fares and Charges for Children

  • Children's basic fare, limited express, express, and reserved seat tickets are half of the adult price. 5 yen is rounded down.
  • The price of the Green Car tickets and Sleeper Car tickets for children is the same as those for adults.

Fares and Charges for Infants and Babies

Infants and Babies have no charges except in the following situations:

  1. (1) When the number of Infants accompanying one adult or child exceeds two (fares and charges are required for the third and any additional infants).
  2. (2) When an infant or baby use a reserved seat, a Green Car seat (excluding unreserved Green Car seats), or a bed.
  3. (3) When an infant travels alone.
