Adults and Children

Adults and children are classified as below.

Adult Over 12 years old (12 years old children still in elementary school count as “child”)
Child Between 6 years old and 11 years old (6 year old children who have not entered elementary school count as “Infant”)
Infant Between 1 year old and 5 years old
Baby Younger than 1 year old

Fares and Charges for Children

  • Children's basic fare, limited express, express, and reserved seat tickets are half of the adult price. 5 yen is rounded down.
  • The price is the same as adults for Green Car and sleeper car tickets.
  • One adult and one child, or two children can use a single bed.

Fares and Charges for Infants and Babies

Infants and Babies have no charges except in the following situations:

  1. (1)When the number of Infants accompanying one adult or child exceeds two (fares and charges are required for the third and any additional infants).
  2. (2)When an infant or baby use a reserved seat, a Green Car seat (excluding unreserved Green Car seats), or a bed.
  3. (3)When an infant travels alone.
