Adults and children are classified as below.

Fares and Charges for Children
- Children's basic fare, limited express, express, and reserved seat tickets are half of the adult price. 5 yen is rounded down.
- The price is the same as adults for Green Car and sleeper car tickets.
- One adult and one child, or two children can use a single bed.
Fares and Charges for Infants and Babies
Infants and Babies have no charges except in the following situations:
- (1)When the number of Infants accompanying one adult or child exceeds two (fares and charges are required for the third and any additional infants).
- (2)When an infant or baby use a reserved seat, a Green Car seat (excluding unreserved Green Car seats), or a bed.
- (3)When an infant travels alone.
