Company History

1987April
  • Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) is established.
1988March
  • New stations are established on the Tokaido Shinkansen (Shin-Fuji, Kakegawa, Mikawa-Anjo).
  • JR Tokai Bus Company is established (now a consolidated subsidiary). In April automobile transport business is transferred to the company.
1989March
  • New-model DMU is introduced to the "Hida" Express on the Takayama line.
1990February
  • JR Central starts topographical and geological surveys along entire proposed route of the Chuo Shinkansen following orders of the Minister of Transport.
1990June
  • JR Central applies to the Minister of Transport for the approval of plans to build the Yamanashi Maglev Test Line and approval is received.
1991October
  • JR Central takes over the Tokaido Shinkansen facilities.
1992March
  • The first "Nozomi" (Series 300) begins commercial operation on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
1992July
  • JR Tokai Hotels Co., Ltd. is established (now a consolidated subsidiary).
1992December
  • JR Central Department Store Co., Ltd. is established. Company name changed to JR Tokai Takashimaya Co., Ltd. in September 1997 (now a consolidated subsidiary).
1994June
  • JR Central Building Co., Ltd. is established (now a consolidated subsidiary).
1997April
  • Running tests start on the Yamanashi Maglev Test Line.
1997October
  • JR Central lists on the first section of the Nagoya, Tokyo and Osaka stock exchanges (integrated with the Tokyo Stock Exchange in July 2013) and also the Kyoto Stock Exchange (merged with the Osaka Stock Exchange in March 2001).
1999March
  • Series 700 is introduced to "Nozomi" on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
1999December
  • Construction of JR Central Towers is completed.
2000March
  • JR Nagoya Takashimaya opens (operated by JR Tokai Takashimaya Co., Ltd.).
2000May
  • Nagoya Marriot Associa Hotel opens (operated by JR Tokai Hotels Co., Ltd.).
2001March
  • JR Tokai Real Estate Co., Ltd. is established (now a consolidated subsidiary).
2001December
  • JR Central is excluded from the jurisdiction of the JR Law through the enactment of amendment to the JR Law.
2002July
  • A new research center is constructed at Komaki City in Aichi Prefecture.
2003October
  • Shinagawa Shinkansen station opens. The timetable is drastically revised by the upgrading of the maximum speed on all Tokaido Shinkansen trains to 270km/h.
2005July
  • The Japan National Railways (JNR) Settlement Headquarters, an independent division within the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency (JRTT), sells 600,000 shares in JR Central.
2006March
  • New Automatic Train Control (ATC) system is introduced into the Tokaido Shinkansen.
2006April
  • JR Central repurchases 268,686 shares of its common stock.
  • The JNR Settlement Headquarters within the JRTT completes the sale of its entire shares in JR Central by selling 286,071 shares of common stock of the company.
2007January
  • Application for changes of "Yamanashi Test Line Construction Plan" is approved by the Minster of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
2007July
  • JR Central introduced the new Series N700 for "Nozomi" services.
2008October
  • JR Central made Nippon Sharyo, Ltd. a consolidated subsidiary.
  • JR Central submitted a report to the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (the "Minister") concerning topographical and geological surveys of the Chuo Shinkansen.
2008December
  • JR Central started to conduct four surveys related to the Chuo Shinkansen received from the Minister.
2009May
  • JR Central cancelled 90,000 shares of treasury stock.
2009December
  • JR Central submitted a report to the Minister concerning the four surveys related to Chuo Shinkansen which we received instructions to implement from the Minister in 2008.
2011May
  • The Minister designated JR Central as the operator and constructor of the Chuo Shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka City.
  • The Minister approved the development plan and instructed JR Central to construct the Chuo Shinkansen.
2012May
  • JR Central cancelled 90,000 shares of treasury stock.
2013February
  • JR Central introduced the new Series N700A for "Nozomi" services.
2013August
  • Completed to extend the Yamanashi Maglev Test Line to 42.8km and upgrade facilities and restarted running test.
2014October
  • The Minister approves the Construction Implementation Plan (Part 1) between Shinagawa and Nagoya along the Chuo Shinkansen.
2015March
  • The Taketoyo Line (between Obu and Taketoyo stations) is electrified.
  • Increase of the maximum speed of the Tokaido Shinkansen to 285km/h.
2016November
  • Applies for long-term loan totaling 3 trillion yen (plan) using the Fiscal Investment and Loan Program (FILP) for the construction of the Chuo Shinkansen to the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency.
2017February
  • Construction of JR Gate Tower is completed.
2017April
  • Takashimaya Gate Tower Mall (operated by JR Tokai Takashimaya Co., Ltd.), Nagoya JR Gate Tower Hotel (operated by JR Tokai Hotels Co., Ltd.) open along with other facilities, resulting in the full-opening of JR Gate Tower.
2018March
  • Minister approves the Construction Implementation Plan (Part 2) between Shinagawa and Nagoya along the Chuo Shinkansen.
2020March
  • All rolling stock of the Company is updated to the N700A type and standardizes to the maximum speed of 285km/h.
  • Maximum twelve "Nozomi" hourly departures.
2020July
  • N700S begins commercial operation.
2022April
  • Due to the revision of the market classification of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Nagoya Stock Exchange, the listing market was changed to the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and to the Premier Market of the Nagoya Stock Exchange.
2022July
  • The new hybrid powered limited express "Series HC85" is introduced to the "Hida" Express on the Takayama line.
2023July
  • The "Series HC85" is introduced to the "Nanki" Express on the Kisei line.
2023December
  • Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation gives permisson regarding the "Construction Implementation Plan(Part3) of the Chuo Shinkansen section between Shinagawa and Nagoya, and change to approved items".
